SC Capital Hires Sun Hung Kai & Co’s Rai Katimansah as Managing Director

2023/01/04 by Christopher Caillavet Leave a Comment

SC Capital managing director Rai Katimansah will focus his attention on debt opportunities

SC Capital Partners has announced the hiring of managing director Rai Katimansah, a 25-year veteran who will focus on the Singapore-based real estate fund manager’s debt strategies.

Katimansah joins SC Capital from Hong Kong’s Sun Hung Kai & Co, where he was a partner and portfolio manager of Multiple Capital Investment Partners (MCIP), a SHK & Co-sponsored real estate debt fund.

In addition to debt, Katimansah’s new role will involve private equity and value-add opportunities, SC Capital said Wednesday in a release.

“Rai brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the private debt space, which is increasingly attractive amid volatility and rising interest rates in the current environment,” said SC Capital chairman Suchad Chiaranussati. “We are excited to have him on board and look forward to broaden our offering to our institutional investor base.”

Debt Portfolio

Based in Singapore, Katimansah will focus his attention on debt across the capital stack, including preferred equity, non-performing loans and both senior as well as junior debt, across Asia Pacific for strategies managed by SC Capital.

Before helping to co-found MCIP with Simon Tozer in 2019, Katimansah spent six years as managing director, head of debt investments and head of Southeast Asian real estate investments at Phoenix Property Investors in Singapore.

His earlier career experience includes senior roles at Titan Capital Asia, Parallax Capital Management, Standard Chartered Bank and Wells Fargo, all in the Lion City, after getting his start at Capital Trust, a Sam Zell-led debt investment platform in New York.

Katimansah has invested more than $4 billion in private debt and private equity investments involving different property types across Asia Pacific, the US and the UK, SC Capital said.

An architecture and urban planning graduate of Cornell University, Katimansah also holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Pennsylvania.

Team-Building Exercises

SC Capital continues to bolster its management team after adding four senior hires last October, including CapitaLand Investment’s Man Yik Chiu, who assumed the role of managing director and head of asset management for SC Capital’s opportunistic fund series.

The firm also brought aboard June Kim, previously of EGW Asset Management, as executive director for its Japan Hospitality Fund, as well as Keppel Capital alum Justin Cham and Lendlease analyst Jester Perez to serve as investment director and research director.

Founded in 2004 by Suchad, SC Capital manages $5.8 billion in assets via entities owned and controlled by the Thai financier and his partners.
