The tragedy happened around 1 pm when 19 painters at the construction site of Donghujingyuan, a residential real estate project under construction in Wuhan.

According to local media, a malfunction occurred as the elevator was going up and it began to accelerate until it reached the top of the 34-storey structure. When the elevator’s ascent was halted at the top of the building the steel cables snapped and the car plummeted 100 metres down, carrying all 19 workers to their deaths.

Local firefighters were called to the scene to attempt to rescue survivors from the wreckage, however, no survivors were found.

According to unnamed sources, the elevator had a capacity of 12 people. Reportedly, Wuhan authorities have launched an investigation into the accidents and have made pledges to punish those who are found responsible for the accident. Also, all construction sites in the city have been asked to halt operations for safety checks.
